In a world where we sit more than we move, posture has quietly become one of the biggest health concerns of modern life.
Whether it’s hours spent at a desk, scrolling on a phone, or behind the wheel, how we hold our bodies throughout the day can either support us or slowly wear us down.
As a physiotherapist with over 26 years of experience working with musculoskeletal and sports injuries, I’ve seen how poor posture leads to unnecessary pain and injury, hinders our breathing and even contributes to low energy and mood.
Personally, I experience neck pain and stiffness with a change in my breathing pattern within a couple of hours working on my laptop. It’s no wonder I feel low in energy and mood afterwards.
So, What Is Good Posture?
Good posture means your body is aligned in a way that places the least strain on your muscles and joints. It allows your muscles to work efficiently and keeps your spine healthy and strong.
But in reality, many of us are living with tech neck (forward head posture), rounded shoulders and hunched upper backs, excessive lower back arching (lordosis), flat back or swayback alignment, and a general loss of core awareness.
Why It Matters
Poor posture can lead to muscle imbalances, joint pain, stiffness, reduced mobility, headaches, fatigue, compromised breathing and digestion, and even lower confidence and mood.
And let’s not forget, posture affects performance, whether you’re playing competitive or recreational sports, or just enjoy an active lifestyle.
The First Step: Awareness
You don’t need to be perfect – you just need to become more aware.
Start by checking in with your body:
- Are your ears stacked over your shoulders?
- Are your shoulders relaxed in a neutral position?
- Is your spine upright in a gentle ‘s’ shape or collapsing forward?
- Are you shifting or leaning more onto one side?
Small adjustments can lead to big change.
Ready to Feel the Difference? Join My Posture Workshop
If you’re curious to learn more, I’d love to invite you to my Posture Workshop on Sat 26th July 10am – 12noon at Ogmore by sea Hall.
In the workshop, I’ll show you how to find your neutral spine, align your body in standing and sitting and how to move in ways that reduce strain on muscles and joints in your neck and back. We’ll also cover postural cues, body scan techniques, and specific exercises that target the most common posture-related issues.
Here’s what people said about the last workshop:
